During my 18-year career, mainly in Albania, I have been involved in the student movement and have had the privilege of participating in the lives of many students. It has been an extraordinary experience.
Through countless stories and coffee chats, I have connected with these students and gained a deeper understanding of their lives.
As I interacted with young Albanians in their early twenties, I realized that their mindset is similar to that of many Eastern European students. They are skeptical of institutional religion, critical of their culture, and dream of living a 'la vita bella' life in the West. I approach them respectfully and thoughtfully to address their concerns and questions. All of this led to the birth of a book.
My book, "Ponder: Reflection on Life, Love, and Faith in a Time of Uncertainty," is a collection of 25 thought-provoking essays I have written over the past decade. It embodies my reflections, experiences, and aspirations and delves into the universal quest for meaning. Through this book, I challenge readers to look beyond the superficial allure of social media and discover the intrinsic value in the complexities of life. I'd like you to please read below an expert from the Introduction.
A culture is defined by its narratives. What stories do we tell ourselves? It's essential to understand the stories that a culture tells about life. These shared narratives describe the popular beliefs around success, happiness, and purpose. While we live in the era of expressive individualism, it's vital to recognize that our context plays a significant role in shaping our identity. By being aware of the stories we are a part of, we can better understand our identity and take meaningful actions that align with our beliefs. A deep connection exists between our cultural narratives, personal identities, and meaningful pursuits. ..
…In this book, I explore the stories Albanians (Easterners) tell themselves and reflect on their meaning, truth, and purpose. I challenge “the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.1” I pose questions and try to offer counter-narratives.
As a testament to my commitment to helping the next generation live a meaningful life, all proceeds from the book will go toward youth work in Albania.
